The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 30th annual International Roadcheck Enforcement Event will take place this June 6-8.

Over a 72-hour period, CVSA-certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers. Each year, the alliance places special emphasis on a category of violations. This year’s focus will be cargo securement.

Inspectors will primarily be conducting the "North American Standard Level I Inspection," which is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Drivers are required to provide items such as their CDL, hours-of-service documentation, and shipping paperwork. Inspectors will also be checking drivers for seat belt usage and the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The vehicle inspection includes checking such items as the brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lights, required lamps, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, trailers, wheels, rims and hubs, and windshield wipers.

Drivers that receive a clear inspection this year, June2-9, will receive, from Saia, the CVSA’s coin that has been created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Roadcheck campaign.

During the campaign it is very important we receive clear inspections. Inspections help determine CSA scores for both Saia and all our drivers. A poor inspection will remain on a driver’s personal CSA score for three years and with Saia for two.

Typically, during the weekend prior to the official Roadcheck dates, and throughout the following week, drivers experience more frequent inspections. As such, be prepared for an inspection. Check your loads, your hours-of-service, and your paperwork. Also, start your trip with a complete pre-trip inspection.

Remember, drive safe!
