Around Saia
This month, we're featuring a story on a long-time line driver's retirement. Also featured is a story on the recognition of two OS&D specialists and a story on DLS employees aiding a fellow team member with CPR.
Long-time Line Driver Retires
WAC Line Driver Bobby Thomas retired earlier this month after over 28 years of service! According to WAC Terminal Manager Jay Swartz, Bobby was first employed at the terminal in 1983 under a contractual agreement, when Saia was trying to establish a footprint in the central Texas market. In 1993, Bobby was hired as one of the first, original employees for the WAC terminal.
During his career as a linehaul driver, he achieved over 25 years of safe driving! After his retirement from the trucking industry, Bobby plans to devote 100% of his time to working cattle and other livestock on his ranch in Rosebud.
Jay said the old hats and jacket featured in the photos are remembrances from the “good ol’ days” when Saia was just starting out in Waco. “Bobby was gracious enough to donate these to the terminal, where they are on display,” he explained. “He had a great career at Saia and we all wish him well, for his future endeavors in ranching.” Bobby, all of us at Saia wish you many wonderful, successful years of ranching. Please know we appreciate your service and that you will be missed!
OS&D Specialists Recognized for their Efforts
HST Regional Human Resources Manager Michael Jones recently wrote to say that the AUS terminal has been acknowledging a local team member with an “Employee of the Month” recognition for the past two years. This month, however, two employees, Marcella and Sylvia, were recognized due to their extraordinary teamwork in cleaning up the OS&D area.
AUS OS&D Specialist Marcella Vallejo, pictured left of AUS Terminal Manager David Reeves, is a recent transfer from the HST terminal. She has been with Saia for 10 years. OS&D Specialist Sylvia Anderson, pictured right, is a 14 year Saia veteran. Living our value of “Taking Care of Each Other,” several of the dock, driver and supervisory employees at the terminal witnessed their work and voted for both to be rewarded with the recognition this month! Congratulations to you both! Love the teamwork and dedication!
Employees Rush to Aid Fellow Team Member
This past April, a life-threatening medical emergency occurred on the DLS dock where time was of the essence. DLS Dockworker Egbuonu Ilochukwu, Dock Supervisor David Coronado, Dockworker Julian Guzman and Assistant Terminal Manager Danny Salazar each took immediate action, making the difference in another person's life. Knowing CPR, and working as a team, these four men demonstrated courage and strength in an emergency situation.
