Space Heater Safety
This month, Safety Training Manager Samuel Wilfert shares important tips on using space heaters safely as winter approaches.
Portable space heaters are devices employed to heat a small, partially enclosed area. The majority of space heaters are powered by electricity and are used when individuals are unsatisfied with the building’s heating system. Unfortunately, space heaters are highly inefficient and pose a serious fire hazard in the workplace when not used properly. Follow these safety tips to avoid causing a fire:
1. Plug Directly Into Outlet
Plug the space heater directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip. Not only is it a tripping hazard, it is an extreme fire hazard due to the high current.
2. Level Surface
Place the space heater on a hard, flat and level surface. Be sure to avoid high traffic areas. Try to buy a heater with an automatic shut-off in case it tips over.
3. Keep 3 Feet of Distance
Keep all flammable objects such as papers, boxes, etc. at least three feet away.
4. Turn It Off
Do not leave your space heater unattended. When leaving the room for extended periods of time, always turn off the appliance - most especially when you leave for the day.
5. Inspect Cords
Check the cord before each use to ensure it is plugged securely into the wall outlet and is not frayed, pinched or damaged in any way. Also check for a UL certification label to ensure it adheres to current safety standards.
