Saia Goes Red
In early February, over 520 Saia employees helped bring awareness to heart disease, the number one cause of death in women.
Recently, over 520 Saia employees helped bring awareness to heart disease, the number one cause of death in women. We learned that educating ourselves and taking a moment to share what we learned on this day can also help educate our loved ones and motivate others to begin new heart-healthy habits. Here are a few heart-healthy facts that we learned:
- Don’t skip breakfast! Eating a healthy breakfast reduces risk factors that may lead to a heart attack over time.
- When you stop smoking, your risk for heart disease and stroke can be cut in half just one year later.
- A healthy blood pressure is 120/80.
- If you are overweight, losing just 5 to 10 percent of your starting weight can improve your blood pressure and blood sugar.
- Read nutrition labels. Try to consume less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol each day.
- A good laugh can send 20 percent more blood through your body and decrease your blood pressure.
- Lowering your blood pressure can reduce your risk of heart disease by 50 percent.
- Read food labels and aim for less than 1500mg of sodium (salt) or less per day.
- Just 150 minutes a week of moderately-intense physical activity lowers your chance of having a heart attack by 30-50 percent.
- A healthy diet could lower your odds of getting heart disease by 25 percent.

On Feb. 3, an e-mail was sent to all participants of this event with a slideshow of employee submitted photos. For all those who are making a big impact in helping build a culture of wellness at Saia, the Delivering Wellness Committee thanks you.
