2019 Saia Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to the 20 recipients of this year's scholarship program.

Cheyenne Biedron
Zion, Illinois
Parent – GLK Line Driver Kenneth Biedron

Cheyenne Biedron graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School this June with a 4.19 GPA. She started at Eastern Kentucky University this fall where she is majoring in biomedical sciences with a pre-medical concentration. With regard to her outstanding academic career, she is described as an “affable and industrious student with a strong commitment (to) learning.” Beyond academics, she also has created projects within her community to raise awareness about the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, where children are interviewed by forensic professionals when there has been a disclosure of physical or sexual abuse, as well as the children they serve. One letter of recommendation stated, “Her efforts rise far above many youths we interact with as she shares an extraordinary passion to make a difference for those she interacts with.”

Daniela Parra Canaveral
Buckeye, Arizona
Parent – PHX Line Driver Raymond Hawk

As a graduate of the Odyssey Preparatory Academy, Daniela Parra Canaveral achieved a 4.6 GPA, completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and was accepted to Arizona State University where she plans on majoring in medical studies. Daniela was able to create her own research project to better the community and her own intricate scientific research/lab report, among other achievements. She is described as someone who is a principled thinker, risk-taker, and excellent communicator. “She looks at problems, not from a single point-of-view, but sees many perspectives and the long-term impacts of the choices that are made.”

Kenechukwa Egbuonu
Grand Prairie, Texas
Parent - DLS Dockworker Ilochukwu Egbuonu

Sporting a 4.6 GPA, Kenechukwa Egbuonu started his junior year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this fall where he is studying biology as he seeks a career in the medical field. Beyond Kenny’s achievements in the classroom, he is described as a student with a clear passion for service and developing community. He has been broadly involved in campus activities including providing a welcoming experience to black students admitted to MIT through the Black Student Union’s Ebony Affair Program. He was described by his nominator as “a wonderful student and compassionate young man” and as someone whose “impact on the world will be innumerable.”

Nakayla Lawhorn
Charlotte, North Carolina
Parent – CLT Line Driver Kevin Lawhorn

Nakayla Lawhorn graduated this May with a 4.3 GPA from Hickory Grove Christian School. She started her freshman year at North Carolina A&T State University this fall where she will major in psychology. Among other achievements, Nakayla was a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, and the National Society of High School Scholars. She was also a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, the Girl Scouts, and the Precision Dance Company. She was described as a student with a “persistence (that) demonstrates an academic potential that will carry her through many more successes in college.” In addition to academics, starting in the ninth grade, she tutored struggling elementary school students as a way to give back to her community.

Devin Lipford
Bono, Arkansas
Parent – JON TM/SR Dale Lipford

Devin Lipford graduated from Valley View High School this past spring with a 4.0 GPA. He is currently a freshman at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas where he will study medicine in addition to being a member of the baseball team. Throughout his school years, Devin maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking a rigorous course load and playing both football and baseball. He also spent numerous hours volunteering with the Salvation Army, Wreaths Across America, the NEA Food Bank, ARKids, and the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society. Devin was described by one nominator as “one of the kindest, selfless, respectful, mature you men” that they ever had the joy to teach.

Gulianna Pedroza
Orlando, Florida
Parent – ORL Dockworker Cesar Pedroza

Gulianna Pedroza graduated this May from Cypress Creek High School with a 5.0 GPA. She is attending Valencia College this fall where she plans on studying finance. She was a member of several clubs and organizations including Business Professionals of America, the National Spanish Honor Society, and the Cypress Creek Leo Club, which provides assistance to the homeless, children in need of necessities, and clean-up of the community around the school campus. She also volunteered her time at Nemours Children’s Hospital. In her letter of recommendation, Gulianna is described as a “remarkable young woman with a caring disposition.”

Jacqueline Ramirez
Wylie, Texas
Parent – GRL City Driver Ramiro Ramirez

This past May, Jacqueline Ramirez graduated from Wylie East High School with a 4.89 GPA even while taking nine Advanced Placement (AP) classes. She is a freshman at Western Texas College where she is studying nursing. Along with numerous extracurricular activities and achievements, Jacqueline completed a STARS internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center that consisted of a two-month long research job in medical research. She also tallied a total of 121 volunteer hours during her senior year alone. Her AP physics teacher described her as “driven to succeed, hard-working, reliable, loyal, and honest” as well as someone that is “focused and respectful.”

Adrianna Sperger
Hickory, North Carolina
Parent – HKY City Driver Ned Sperger

Currently attending High Point University, Adriana Sperger graduated with honors from Fred T. Foard High School, as well as the Lenoir-Rhyne High School Scholars Academy, earlier this year with a 4.0 GPA. In addition to her academic achievements, Adriana participated in numerous activities and clubs including cheerleading, yearbook, Beta Club, and theater. She also volunteered her time at Mt. View Elementary School where she read to kindergarteners, provided clerical support, and assisted with needed errands. One instructor said Adrianna “possess leadership skills, a forward-thinking mindset, and a strategic planning approach that is unparalleled to her peers.”

Dynasty Stephenson
Houston, Texas
Parent – HST Dockworker Donathan Stephenson

Having graduated from Lamar High School this spring with a 4.37 GPA, Dynasty Stephenson is currently enrolled at the Prairie View A&M University where she is studying engineering. A teacher stated that Dynasty is a one student who truly inspires her as she leads by example by being “a positive young woman who is very mature for her age.” Beyond the classroom, she is a member of several clubs and volunteers her time with the Houston Food Bank as well as Women on the Way Up, a program that mentors girls with regard to their careers and future.

Eve Vishnick
Parma, Ohio
Parent – CLV City Driver James Vishnick

Now attending Bennington College, Eve Vishnick graduated with a 4.62 GPA from Parma High School. Eve plans to study art history. She was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a GEAR UP Ohio ambassador, participated in the Ohio Youth Leadership Summit, and was a member of the Girl Power Leadership Academy. She also volunteered her time at the Parma Animal Shelter and with Special Olympics. Her teacher said she is someone who possesses leadership skills, intelligence, maturity, and an outstanding work ethic.

Isabel Granat
Guyton, Georgia
Parent – SAV City Driver Davis Granat

Isabel Granat is currently a junior at Georgia Southern University where she is majoring in health education and promotion. Isabel completed her sophomore year with a 3.95 GPA. Aside from her academic achievements, she has participated in several outreach programs, volunteering with the likes of the American Cancer Society, Manna House Food Pantry, the Treutlen House, Second Harvest Food Bank and People Helping People, which collects and distributes everyday necessities like hygiene products, water, and food to low income and homeless families living in Savannah, Georgia. “She is a great example and leader to our current youth…,” explained her youth pastor and nominator.

Christina Grace Jackson
Millington, Tennessee
Parent – MPS Account Executive Paul Jackson

Christina Grace Jackson graduated this spring with a 3.71 GPA from Harding Academy and is now an undergraduate student studying nursing at the University of Memphis. She has spent numerous hours volunteering via mission trips both in the United States and Ghana, West Africa, where she spent two weeks at an orphanage, called the Village of Hope, housing over 250 children. “Grace is an incredibly hard worker. She has been involved in many local and global service projects…,” explained her youth minister and nominator. “In all of these areas, she has shown leadership and compassion for those she was serving.”

Kaniya Jackson
Riverdale, Georgia
Parent – ATL Dockworker Zabria Bell

Graduating this spring with a 3.77 GPA from Charles R. Drew High School, Kaniya Jackson is now a psychology and human services major at Clayton State University. Her list of recognitions includes National Beta Club as well as Principal’s List honoree, and honors graduate. Kaniya was described as a person with a high level of dedication to her academic endeavors as well as someone who is talented, caring, intuitive, dedicated and focused in her pursuit of excellence. “Kaniya is truly a standout individual that impresses everyone she meets.”

Kevin Ramirez Lopez
Sun Valley, Nevada
Parent – RNO Dockworker Carlos Payen

Kevin Ramirez continues his studies at the University of Nevada where he is majoring in geophysics. He closed out his freshman year with a 3.82 GPA.  Beyond his academic achievements, Kevin belongs to several organizations including the Optimist Club of Nevada and the Boy Scouts of America. As a volunteer, he prepares meals for the Ronald McDonald House, hosts monthly bingo games at a retirement community, and mentors other Scouts as the work toward Eagle Rank. Kevin has been described as an impressive young man with goals and direction in life.

Olivia Lullmann
Ely, Iowa
Parent – CRD Line Driver Shane Lullmann

Olivia Lullmann is continuing her college career at the University of Iowa where she is studying neuroscience with an eye towards a medical career. She finished her freshman year with a 4.0 GPA. She has been named to both the President’s and Dean’s List for her achievements in academics. Aside from her course work, Olivia has also been working as a student research assistant. According to her assistant professor and nominator, she is someone who has tremendous potential to succeed. “She is motivated, smart, hardworking and conscientious.”

Darlene Olmedo
Reseda, California
Parents – ORG Line Driver Jose Romero

Currently attending the University of California, Los Angeles, where she is seeking her master’s degree in social welfare, Darlene Olmedo is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. There, as an undergraduate, she majored in social welfare and ethnic studies. Outside of the classroom, Darlene has worked as a volunteer with numerous organizations over the years including the East Bay Community Law Center, Bay Area Women Against Rape, the Berkeley Free Clinic, and Habitat for Humanity, among others. She has been described as someone who is “committed to working to help those in need…”

Julia Parker
Milwaukee, Oregon
Parent – PDX Line Driver Welborn Parker

As a dually-enrolled student, Julia Parker graduated this June with an associate’s degree from Clackamas Middle College, achieving a 3.95 GPA on her way to studying marine biology at Oregon State University. Outside of the classroom, Julia has volunteered for several organizations working to preserve local watersheds and natural environments such as North Clackamas Urban Watersheds Council and Friends of Trees. She has also volunteered with the Oregon Food Bank. She is described as an exceedingly respectful and responsible student who is excited to achieve her goals in higher education so she can pursue her goal of working in environmental conservation and marine ecosystems restoration.

Jasmine Rodgers
Houston, Texas
Parent – HST City Driver Donell Rodgers

Currently attending Philander Smith College where he plans on studying engineering, Jasmine Rodgers graduated this June with a 4.05 GPA from Dekaney High School. In addition to her academic accomplishments, including graduating with honors, Jasmine amassed over 100 community service hours volunteering her time at the Houston Public Library, with the Fallbrook Dream Girls, Houston Food Bank and more. A nominator described her as someone with a passion for giving back and as “very hard-working, selfless, outgoing, loving and ambitious young lady.”

Sydney Roscoe
Temperance, Michigan
Parent - TOL Parts Buyer Searle Roscoe

Sydney Roscoe is enrolled at Mercy College of Ohio where she is studying to receive a degree in nursing. She finished out her spring 2019 semester with an impressive 3.85 GPA, but still had time to contribute over 250 volunteer hours this past year as part of the Mercy College Hoffman Ambassador Program. She also has been assisting with her nominator’s invalid mother who has been debilitated by a stroke, which left her unable to verbally communicate. “Not only does Sydney represent the great qualities any caregiver should exhibit, she is also a smart and competent young woman for whom a bright future is assured.”

Vincent Spina
Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania
Parent – SCR Terminal Manager Ronald Spina

As a student at Drexel University where he continues to study chemical engineering, Vincent Spina completed his junior year with a 3.99 GPA. Still, it’s his ongoing commitment to community service that has made Vincent truly stand out. This year, Vincent was chosen to plan a trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he led a group that partnered with a local disaster relief organization assisting flood victims. His mentor and nominator said, “Vincent helped run what has been the most seamless trip in my five years as a faculty advisor.”
