COVID-19: Staying Safe
This month Safety Training Manager Samuel Wilfert outlines Saia's policy and procedure changes to help protect employees from COVID-19. Also featured are stories on the CGO terminal's efforts to increase awareness of avoiding injuries related to slipping on ice during the winter months, a story on best practices for email security and a story on Saia's ID badge requirement.
The company has recently made a number of policy and procedure changes and released several communications around the steps being taken to help protect employees from COVID-19. These have included, but are not limited to:
- Stressing the importance of practicing good health hygiene
- Cleaning and sanitizing facilities
- Providing drivers with disposable gloves to use during pickup/deliveries
- Asking drivers to maintain 6 feet of separation from customers
- Implementing delivery receipt policy changes such as “No Signature Required” to limit customer contact
- Staging freight, when requested, to allow for safe and quick customer unloading
- No longer requiring drivers to enter the terminal unless they need to use the restroom or work the dock
- Denying outside entities, with the exception of cleaning and vending vendors, terminal access
- Instituted telecommuting, where possible
- Restricting employee travel and meetings
We continue to urge everyone to wash their hands as frequently and as well as possible using warm water and soap.
Also, if you are ill, live with someone that has COVID-19 symptoms, or has tested positive, we ask that you contact your healthcare professional, honor the quarantine guidelines, stay home, and inform your supervisor.
CGO Terminal Raises Safety Awareness Bar
The CGO terminal was recently recognized for raising the bar on safety awareness. Signs were created to increase awareness of avoiding injuries related to slipping on ice during the winter months. These were placed near the terminal entrance. Additionally, the CGO dock was also stenciled with “Caution Forklifts in Use” to raise awareness of pedestrian safety on the loading dock. This stencil was showcased in a previous safety communication by Carlos Caraza and the FON terminal. Since then, many terminals have also stenciled their loading docks with the reminder!
Email Security Best Practices
open any email attachments that end with: .exe, .scr, .bat, .com, or other executable files you do not recognize.
“unsubscribe” — it is easier to delete the e-mail than to deal with the security risks.
ever click embedded links in messages without hovering your mouse over them first to check the URL.
respond or reply to spam in any way. Use the delete button.
check the email ‘From’ field to validate the sender. This ‘From’ address may be spoofed.
check for so-called ‘double-extended’ scam attachments. A text file named ‘safe.txt’ is safe, but a file called ‘safe.txt.exe’ is not.
report all suspicious emails to your information technology (IT) help desk.
note that www.microsoft.com and www.support.microsoft.software.com are two different domains. (Only the first one is real!)
Saia Identification Badge
Based on our commitment to the security of Saia employees, our facilities and at the request of our customers, Saia requires ID badges to be worn by all employees at all times while on duty and at all times within the confines of a Saia facility.
ID badges must be worn in plain site.
In the event of a lost or damaged ID badge, please reach out to your terminal manager to facilitate a replacement.
