At Saia LTL Freight, we are committed to providing a safe work environment. As such, we recently participated in a “Safety Gap Analysis” and a mock Department of Transportation audit was completed by an outside third party.

Just as the Safety Department audits facilities, it’s important to mark progress and cultural growth by enlisting a third party auditor to review our overall processes and compliance as a company.

Providing a safe work environment requires education that goes beyond compliance training. In each of our job categories, there is specific training for the tasks of the position. Some of the training is compliance, some is job knowledge and efficiency, but all training is based around position and environmental safety.

The results were very encouraging; we scored in the top ranges for “Best Practices” or “Leading to Best Practices” in all categories. Congratulations to everyone for this achievement.

Every month the Safety Committee receives information that is designed to educate members on workplace safety, regulation and best practices. This month, they received information regarding the injuries and accidents that were recorded in their facility in the past year. The purpose of the committee reviewing the facility’s safety history is to identify and bring awareness to incidents and behavior that need to be addressed. Some terminals have higher incidents of backing accidents, injuries, or a greater amount of unreported damage or accidents.

Understanding the events and opportunities at each of our facilities, is key in eliminating unsafe behaviors and promoting a safe work environment for all employees.

This process is very similar to the near-miss log. The purpose of the terminal recording events on a near-miss log is to identify events and behaviors that could have led to an accident or injury. Secondly, a near-miss log assists in eliminating the hazard by engineering out the hazard or allowing for re-training.

If you have served or are currently serving on a Safety Committee, thank you for your contributions to Saia’s safety culture. It takes commitment from every employee to grow in safety. Every committee member that participates in all three of the committee meetings for the first quarter of 2017 will receive a Safety Committee t-shirt as a thank you for your contribution and our appreciation.

Let’s continue to work together toward excellence in safety!
